"二五仔」的來由有以下三種說法：
一，據說起源於辛亥革命。
武昌起義代表著辛亥革命的爆發，由於同盟會四分五裂後，很多行動計劃都被泄露，對於出賣組織的人，孫中山氣憤的稱其為「義忤仔」——「起義的初衷被忤後出賣組織的人」。
由於「義忤」粵語中與「二五」同音，因此，「義忤仔」在口語中就是「二五仔」。
二，"少林五祖"傳說
話說明末清初，少林寺有一百零八個武僧，表面練功，暗裡從事反清復明的大業。清朝要剷除他們，攻打少林，苦無辦法。於是，他們收買其中一個武僧，叫做馬寧。
馬寧甘為清廷鷹犬，出賣少林，當清兵攻打少林，他裡應外合，最後演變成火燒少林，著名的"少林五祖"傳說，由此而來。
事後，江湖中人都不齒馬寧的所作所為，但又不能宣之於口，馬寧在武僧中排行第七，大家一談到他，將七字拆開做二和五，以後大罵馬寧，就叫他做"二五"，泛指那些吃裡扒外，出賣朋友之無恥之徒。
三，還有一個更古的記錄，出自春秋晉國的兩個五： 春秋時期的晉國，晉獻公有兩個親信，常在獻公面前搬弄是非，打小報告，一個叫王五，一個叫東關五，他們同是一夥。所以朝臣們叫他們做"二五"。從此，"二五"成了那些搬弄是非，打小報的代名詞。「貳伍」即是背叛隊伍，為其他勢力服務的內應的意思。（聶巨平）"
